The Rebirth of the Gresham Palace - Four Seasons Hotel Budapest
Project Manager and Country Manager (1999-2003)
A creation of architect Zsigmond Quittner and a pure product of Secessionist Art Nouveau movement, the Budapest Gresham Palace was erected in 1906 by Gresham Life assurance Company of London. Prior to World War II, it was considered as an architecural jewel, not only in Budapest but in the whole of Central Europe.
At the start of the 20th century, this unique monument, ideally situated on the banks of the Danube, was the meeting place for aristocracy of the period. It remains as a landmark in the heart of the city to this day.
History is, nevertheless, unforgiving. The damage suffered during the Second World War and the transformation of the building, firstly into soviet baracks, then into a plain apartment building, caused a heavy blow. Its reconstruction was also marked by numerous mishaps.
The metamorphosis of this magnificient palace into a 5-star hotel for the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts group has been completed by CFE, managed by Pascal Steens and his team.
The reconstruction was in Hungary and internationaly recognized as one of the nicest examples how its team turns reconstruction into and art.
